jimmy the one
jimmy the one's JournalWhy there is an E after the U in Robt Muellers name
Robert Muller's proper name in German was spelled with an umlaut over the U, but only one E.
This might be Muller with an umlaut if my copy and paste transfers the umlaut: Robert Müller.
Robert Muller of course died yday. RIP Herr Muller.
In German, an umlaut (oom lowt) is a diacritic which slightly alters the pronunciation of the 3 letters a, o, and u, as well as the couplet au. An umlaut is two dots atop the letter a, o, or u - one more dot than the similar dot above the English lower case I. The colon : would be an umlaut sideways, rotate 90 degrees for the umlaut.
The umlaut alters pronunciation by simply rounding the lips, like kissing mum or sister on the forehead, and then pronouncing the letters in English as saying the long a, long o, long u (pronounce the U as oo, not yoo). Do it now and you can detect a slight difference between the long English vowel and the umlauted vowel, though it sounds nearly the same with a tonality difference.
The umlauted German word Madchen (young girl) is thus close to Maid chen, rather than mad chen.
German Ostlich (easterly) rhymes close with toast lick. OL (oil) close with sole. Muller as moo ler.
The umlauted au is most famous in the German 'fraulein' where the umlauted au sound is like English ow, so close to Frow line - not froy line as some do. Fraulein is also a young lady.
My iPad does not have umlaut capability, which was essentially the reason for the added E after the 3 vowels a, o, and u, as I will explain.
About the 1960's, perhaps earlier, American and British typewriters and keyboards also did not have the capability to type an umlaut. So when umlauted words and names such as Muller appeared in English newspapers and many documents, the umlaut was perforce missing, German words mispronounced, and Muller was pronounced as a short U, rhyming with duller.
A few umlauted words such as Uber were pronounced more properly as oober, surely due the well known song 'Deutschland uber alles'.
The Germans became so perplexed at hearing their umlauted words being mispronounced so frequently as short English vowels that they developed a strategy to correct the misperceptions.
They realized that by placing an E after the A, O, and U, of course easily done on typewriters, the English speaker would pronounce the 3 vowels as long rather than short, which is indeed a rule of thumb in English, though not absolute. Due, rue, sue, doe, hoe, foe, toe, aeleron, aerobics.
And thus the written German umlauted word would be pronounced more properly as a long vowel. That was the hope and desire!
Alas, over the years the E stratagem has tended to be disregarded at least in America, as evidenced by our general mispronouncing Muller, still as rhyming with duller.
NATO is a defensive pact, with no further obligations
From the director of global policy at GW Bush Institute ... [fear not dems, it is accurate, no lie]
NATO is the gold standard in international alliances, enhancing, supporting and advancing U.S. national security like no other partnership. Created in 1949 with the United States as a founding member, NATO is a defensive alliance committed to collective defense, crisis management, and deterrence.
https://www.bushcenter.org/publications/nato-has-invoked-article-5-only-once-in-its-history
The alliances commitment to Article 5 NATOs collective defense agreement that means an attack against one shall be considered an attack against all is the core of NATOs existence, evolution, and unparalleled strength. The only time it has been triggered was after Sept. 11, 2001, when NATO aircraft were deployed to help protect U.S. airspace after terrorists murdered thousands of Americans in New York City, in the crash in Pennsylvania and at the Pentagon.
-------------------------
Trump is apparently trying to spin it that Iran was on the verge of attacking, so NATO should be obliged to assist USA against Iranian aggression. At least most all are not falling for his twisted reasoning and deception.
He is also trying his pathetic best to crawl out an escape hatch, claiming, paraphrased, that 'nobody told me about the strait of Hermuz'.
If a NATO member attacks another country, other NATO members are under no obligation to join the conflict.
7 of 8 NFL playoff teams are from blue states
I don't believe I've ever seen it so lopsided before.
I look at it as a premonition of gooder things to come in 2026.
Saturday January 17
Buffalo vs Denver - New York, Colorado for novice fans
San Francisco vs Seattle - California, Washington state, ditto
Sunday January 18
Houston vs New England - Texas, New England duh
Los Angeles (rams) vs Chicago - California, Illinois
Just thought of something. New England comprises 6 states which all vote blue, so it's more like 12 states represented in the playoffs to just, uh, hahaha, the LONE star state.
Houston Texas the only chance maga world has this year, and California gots two shots at it.
Texas and California just like the redistricting wars. QB Gavin Newsome vs the fumbling Trump eh?
I'm for San Fran, tho any but Houston.
PS Houston Texas had 20% higher violent crime rate than Chicago in 2024, and 40% higher property crime rate. Why no national guard and thugs of ICE in Houston, Trump?

Disregard 'real clear politics' poll of polls, it is skewed to trump by inclusion of several pro trump polls such as Rasmussen 51-48, trafalgar 54-45, RMG 51-47, InsiderAdvantage 54-44. These are c.r.a.p. polls - computer responsive automated polling. They also blatantly pad their results to the right to put their candidates in a better light, the reason they exist. They proliferate like rabbits, a new pro trump pollster is spawned about every 3 months, they are unethical and should be ignored.
When included as of same date June 28 with the reputable CNN polls listed above, the real clear politics field average is, presto chango, 47% approval, 51% disapproval, only a four point spread, contrasted with the 17 point disapproval spread from CNN.
Pimlico Racetrack shutting down after the Preakness today
The Preakness race, second race in the Triple Crown of horse racing, will next year be held at Laurel racetrack about 50 miles sw of Pimlico, Baltimore.
Pimlico will be rebuilt not far from Baltimore and is scheduled to reopen 2027. Maybe Woodbine, Md.
I have fond memories of Pimlico in the seventies, taking friends, dates, generally losing, maybe getting robbed at gunpoint at my parking space. Erk, last not so fond.
Maybe Jimmy? Yeah 3 guys one of which had a newspaper wrapped around his hands so I never saw a gun but they said he had a gun and so it's technically an armed robbery. Got $40 my wallet and car keys but had a spare in the glove comptmt and drove straight to sheriffs. Maybe bluffed me.
Was that a lucky day? Or unlucky?
10, 20, 30, 40, 50 or more, bloody red tariffs, were...
10, 20, 30, 40, 50 or more, bloody red tariffs, were shuttin' down the stores.
A thousand men fired tryin' to end that spree, of the bloody red tariffs, from tyranny.
10, 20, 30, 40, 50 or more, bloody red tariffs, spread shore to shore.
Diplomats banded tryin' to end that spree, of the bloody red tariffs, from tyranny.
10, 20, 30, 40, 50 or more, magats even shouted, no more no more.
The tyrant only smirked, for thee not me, go my bloody red tariffs, from tyranny.
10, 20, 30, 40, 50 or more, democrats screamed, abhor abhor.
The cretin just laughed, with mirth and glee, for his bloody red tariffs, from tyranny.
Any resemblance to 'Bloody Red Baron of Germany,' is totally.... Intentional.
A last hope I guess, is that sometime today, April first, the tyrant will fly out of his cuckoo clock and shout April Fools! Tariffs Begone!
Democrats should enter Musk $million giveaway
Why not? Sign Musk's petition to support the first amendment (duh) , and, well, the second amendment - the premises behind participating and getting $47 and a chance to win a million.
If you do not support 2ndA in its current subversion (as I do not) just hold your nose and sign and take the $47 for entering the Elon Musk bribery canard, the premises of which are not legally binding.
Any party is eligible, and you need not even vote, just be registered.
With even partial democrat participation odds are that at least one Dem would win a million. Could then donate some to Kamela 11th hour.
(Hope I am not repeating a previous idea)
5 unfortunate submariners, 8000 other americans died yday
Was sad the mini submarine imploded killing all 5 aboard, yday or day before.
Was sad 8,000 other americans died yday as well, mostly due old age I suppose.
Of the people who died in the submarine tragedy, their ages were 58, 77, 19, 48, 61.
Was sad 25,000 people died yday in India, mostly due old age I suppose.
Was sad last month, and prior month after month, dozens, hundreds of people died trying to escape persecution by sailing across the Mediterranean sea seeking asylum in friendly countries. These deaths were met with scant coverage & shoulder shrugs.
8,000 more americans will die today, tomorrow, and likely every day for the rest of our lives, and only a tiny fraction will get national recognition or saturation TV coverage, or examining the way they died, how much money they made, or how important they were or were not.
This submarine tragedy is a novelty for TV producers and TV audiences, why it has gotten so much attention the past 4 days, a novelty which cable networks are exploiting for bizarre reasons, imo,
It was sad sure, but pardon me for not getting too emotional or distressed or dwelling upon the particulars. I heard all I needed to hear in 30 minutes tv coverage. They died instantly no pain no suffering, which is far better than most of the other 8,000 americans & hundreds of thousands of earthlings who died some in agony, others in some sort of discomfort.
People die every day, this was simply a novel way to go.
